Lady Britannia
Lady Britannia is a personification of the British Isles that dates back to the Roman era. When the Romans conquered the province of Britannia in AD 43, they gave it a female identity, a common practice for territories during that period. Over the centuries, her image has evolved, serving as a potent symbol of national identity. Britannia first appeared on Roman coins under the Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD, symbolizing Britain’s subjugation under Roman rule. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Britannia disappeared for several centuries until she was revived during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I as a symbol of British maritime power. Her image solidified during the reign of Charles II, when she reappeared on British coins, her trident symbolizing Britain’s naval dominance. The 18th century saw Britannia become a beacon of British liberty, often depicted seated with a shield, trident, and a Corinthian helmet, as the nation forged its identity as an island fortress of freedom and strength. In modern times, Lady Britannia remains an enduring emblem, her image gracing various forms of media, notably the British fifty-pence coin and the gold and silver Britannia coins minted by the Royal Mint.
Investing in Gold Britannias
The gold Britannia coin was first launched by the Royal Mint in 1987, and was the UK’s first official one ounce gold coin. The UK has also released the Sovereign, which has been available for over 200 years, however this coin is only 7.3 grams, not 1 ounce. Since that time the UK has released the Britannia in silver and in platinum, in response to the coin’s popularity with gold and silver investors.
The gold Britannia is unique, particularly for UK residents, as no Capital Gains Tax is owed on any profits earned by British residents. This makes the coins particularly popular with UK residents.
The face value of each 1/10 Oz Gold Britannia is £10, which means that the UK government guarantees these coins to that value, although the gold value of the coin is far greater.
The Britannia coin series is available in gold in 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz and 1 oz sizes, with one ounce gold Britannias being the most popular size. These coins are also available in 1 Oz size in tubes of 10 and monster boxes of 100 coins, for investors wishing to buy larger amounts of gold Britannias.
